APPR Multimedia Story Quilt Project 2015
Celebrating Sue Monk Kidd’s The Invention of Wings

Uniting themes and symbols from Kidd’s novel, the APPR Writing Contest will expand to include any art forms students wish to work in.

We invite students to consider: what is storytelling? If significant moments in a life can be sewn together and a personal history told in a quilt, then how do other art forms similarly allow us to communicate our stories?

Based on the significance of the story quilt in Wings, the contest will culminate in a showcase presenting student text, experiential speeches, visual art, dance, and music in a “quilted" performance.

Students may submit work in any medium with the idea of telling a story.
Performance arts students are also invited to participate, using their dance or music to perform a story at the event. For students submitting writing, we encourage using the short forms of flash fiction or poetry to imply story, perhaps by focusing on moments in time or meaningful objects.

Furthermore, in the spirit of equality and collaboration, other themes from Kidd’s novel, the PPCC Writing Center will host a series of collaborative workshops. The workshops will center around writer-artist activities, encouraging participants to find meaningful creative partnerships and unlock potential through exploration of new media.
